In high
school, Bill Weber gave us this problem often. You are riding a train at 30 miles an hour; a
second train leaves a station 100 miles away from you at 20 miles an hour, and
heading toward you. At what mileage marker will the 2 train’s pass? Jim, my son
gave me a similar question only with a few more zeros.
Have
you heard of the European space project called ‘Rosetta’?This robust project is fantastic. It was
launched 10 years ago and will concludeon August the 6th. When it meets a comet headed in the
opposite direction at 1000’s of mph. The
rocket’s computers were put to sleep for 9 ½ years, and sprang awake last week.
And the rocket was filled with enough power juice for a flight of 10 years. The
rocket will launch a camera to land on the comet and record pictures as the
comet flies on its flight thru space.
Could you solve this simple math problem? All you need is direction, speed, and 10 years
in time until contact? WOW!! And I did not even know that Europe
has a NASA program. What job security for 10 years, if you manned a computer.
For those of you who wondered, the 2 trains met in 2 hours at mile marker
60.
Here is the web site to watch contact of Rosetta and the comet on August 6,
2014.
