Bonobos...the unknown Ape. Most people do not even know what
Bonobos are. I have been documenting their behavior for over 4 years now at the
Jacksonville Zoo here in Florida and all I can say is this: "Minutes turn
to hours when I am photographing Bonobos. I love to watch their mannerisms and
interactions with each other. They are without a doubt our closest relative. It
is my dream to one day get a chance to photograph them in the wild in their own
world in the DRC." (© Graham McGeorge/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest) #

I took this photograph near the spillway of Jordan lake dam

perfect timing. i tryed for 9 years to get this picture on the yellowstone river but never even close. my lens was not long enough, an excuse, the bird never dived to the water, an excuse, and look at that wonderful reflection on the water, the sky and a the mountain behind the river. the only additional thing i wish this picture showed was it is cropped too high, there is the start of a wonderful reflection of the osprey on the water.

I have been in Jakarta and the painted walls are specatacular but this photo doesn't show that, we get that by reading his explanation. a great photo should stand alone, and never require the maker to give a written explanation. maybe HDR would have helped a little.

This church was built about 200 years ago on the banks of
Hemavathi River near Hassan, India. About 25 years before, Gorur Dam was built,
and every year the monsoons fill up the reservoir and flood the church,
submerging it. Every Cycle takes away part of this holy place until nothing
will remain. Hopefully this picture would provide a view of what man makes and
how nature takes it away. (© Gurdyal Singh/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest) #

what's weird about this photo?. Was the photographer wanting us to see more than is here. Maybe a photographer should not be a writer, AND AFTER 42 CRITIQUES, I'M SURE YOU ARE SAYING THE SAME THING. TERRY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Now for the 2013 winners.

I was in Manaus, Amazonas, during the Brazilian
Aquathlon (swimming and running) championship. I photographed it from the water
and my lens got completely wet, but there was so much energy in these boys that
I just didn't worry about that. —Wagner Araujo
National Geographic TravelerDirector of Photography Dan Westergren, one
of this year's judges, shares his thoughts on the first place winner:
“This photo really captures my attention because of the peak action it depicts. I love the horizontal tension caused by the main subject on his way out of the picture to the right. Classic photographic rules of composition say that you should not have subjectsmoving out of the frame, but this shot shows
that sometimes the most exciting photo can be made by breaking the rules. I
also love the body language of the main subject; he's trying to lean forward
but still holding back to get his last breath before plunging into the water.
Finally, the addition of the tall buildings along the waterfront makes this
more than just a sports picture; it’s also a portrait of Manaus, Brazil.”

- I hiked out to these ruins at night hoping to photograph them with the Milky Way, but instead a thunderstorm rolled through, creating this dramatic image. —Max Seigal
National Geographic Traveler Director of Photography Dan Westergren, one of this year's judges, shares his thoughts on the second place winner:
“This photo combines two different scenes into one: the small kiva in a cliff dwelling and the grand vista of Canyonlands National Park across the valley. I really like the two different color palettes—warm inside and purple outside. This two-for-one scene was caused by the lightning storm outside the dwelling, which lit up the landscape like it was a huge electronic flash. Looking at this picture I can imagine what a wonderful sight it must have been for the ancient people who lived here. It doesn't seem too amazing now in our modern world, but might have been mind-blowing for the prehistoric residents.”

- Cheetahs jumped on the vehicle of tourists in Masai Mara national park, Kenya. —Yanai Bonneh
National Geographic Traveler Director of Photography Dan Westergren, one of this year's judges, shares his thoughts on the third place winner:
“I've seen a few different pictures of cheetahs on tourist vehicles. Apparently they like to use the cars as a higher vantage point to look around. But, this picture of the cheetah skirting the open roof of this Land Cruiser brings a new vision of danger to the safari experience. It's a fun photo to look at because of all the secondary activity. The photographer in the front seat is turned around with camera to eye, but then there's the woman in the middle row, trying to capture a selfie with the cheetah in the background. Danger and subtle humor combined in one picture. What could be better?”
